Aero: Kelsey Burbank – Costa Rica 2014 – City Life
The city life in Costa Rica is very different from what I have seen in my life. Everything is very close together and the main point of the town in the park and the Church which lies in the center of the town. That is where everything happens and where most of the stores are located. No one is in a hurry they take their time going and doing anything. Which is different from here in the United States because here were are all about being on time and rushing to do anything or going anywhere. We don’t take the time to enjoy the day we are always worried about getting things done. In the center of the town you can find a large park that is beautiful. There are families there and there are also many different stores, restaurants, and so much more. If you ever get lost or don’t know where you are you can look for the top of the church and make your way to the center of town to find your way. The streets are very small and most of them are also one-way streets until you get to roads farther away from the center of the town.
Majority of the vehicles used in Costa Rica are small cars and motorcycles. You see the occasional SUV or truck but it is mostly small cars. The police in Costa Rica are prominent but what we learned and noticed is that the police is not really there for the people of Costa Rica they are there for the tourists and to keep the tourists safe.
The town also had some very different drainage systems from what we have here in the United States. Because in Costa Rica they have a very harsh rainy season they are very prone to flooding, so to help the rain water escape they make the drainage trenches that carry the water away. When you are walking you have to be careful that you watch where you are going or else you can end up falling in one. Thy also put in some walkways though over the trenches for people to walk across the street so that they don’t have to worry about falling or tripping. Some of the walkways are concrete while others are grates that can be walked on. While some people use cars or motorcycles most of the people in the town walk to where they want to go or use the public bus system. When you walk through town you kind of get the feeling of being in New York City because of the way the town in set up in a grid system. But when you are riding in the car on the streets it is nothing like being in NYC. The cars swerve around each other and while they practice the term “Pura Vida” they don’t like to wait in traffic down there. If you are stopped at a red light and then it turns green your car needs to be moving as soon as it changes or else you get a horn from multiple cars behind you. If you are not going fast enough cars will swerve around you to get in front to go faster. The way the city works was amazing to me. I loved how the city was built around in specific point and at the point is where life happens.
