Modern Languages @ FLCC: Costa Rica, 2014

FLCC’s Costa Rica Study Abroad program offers students the opportunity to experience an international study abroad program without worrying about burdensome financial or time commitments. This SUNY-accredited travel course is great for students who have never ventured outside the country and want to have a safe experience while earning college credit!

Students study in Costa Rica for over two weeks, attend language classes, stay with host families, and embark on excursions to diverse beaches, natural reserves, and other ecological sites around the country.

I feel that attending the Costa Rica Study Abroad Program will allow me to gain a great deal of experience that can help me prepare for a school located out of the United States. This experience would allow me to develop a better understanding of cultural diversity and allow me to build communication skills that can be used in my future career. I feel that it would be an amazing experience to be able to step outside of my comfort zone and compare and contrast another culture to my own.

Diversity is an important part of life in the United States. There are so many different types of cultures that many of us don’t even know about. As a future educator many of the different cultures that we have here in the Unites States can be seen in a classroom. I feel that going on this trip to Costa Rica will help me as a future educator in better understanding the different cultures that we see today. I also feel that in going on this trip I will be able to experience what it is like to be in a new and different place that I have never been before. With this being the first time leaving the country I feel that going on this trip will allow to step out of my comfort zone and experience all that Costa Rica has to offer.

I feel that attending the Costa Rica Study Abroad program will expand my knowledge on several different aspects of life. As a humanitarian, this trip will help me gain insight as to what it is like for people living in a third world country, and I will better understand what it is like living among people of different cultural upbringing. As a student aware that English is not the only spoken language, this trip will strengthen the little knowledge I have of such a widely used language. As an Environmental Science major, being able to live a short time in a incredibly bio-diverse country is an extraordinary opportunity for me, and the fact that I am able to explore with this opportunity is positively mind-blowing.

I am very fortunate that I get to experience this once in a lifetime opportunity most people can only dream of.  I think studying abroad and learning about different cultures is a very critical part to becoming a well-rounded individual.  I believe it is important to learn and experience different parts of the world in order to get outside of my comfort zone.  Working in a business as a manager, I will need to be mindful of all different kinds of backgrounds.  Going to Costa Rica will allow me to become more open to new ideas and beliefs. I really hope to implement all that I learn in my Costa Rica experience into everyday life in the United States.  I am very excited to see all that this beautiful country has to offer.

FLCC’s Costa Rica Study Abroad Program is a way to discover more about myself and explore a different country and culture different from my own. It’s a way for me to hone my communication skills, learn about the Spanish language and the unique culture and ecosystem of Costa Rica. It’s a once and a life time chance to step outside my comfort zone, challenge myself and experience cultural diversity first hand. It will be my first traveling experience outside the United States and I am eager to take every opportunity to learn more about traveling abroad, the culture and people of Costa Rica, and pursue personal growth.

Traveling to a Spanish-speaking country has been my dream for many years now and it’s finally coming true. I feel very privileged and excited to be able to travel abroad to Costa Rica this winter. Not only will it allow me to practice my Spanish but I’ll also be able to experience the cultural differences first hand instead of learning about it in a book. Studying Spanish for seven years in school has turned into a passion; a passion to experience as much of the Spanish culture in my lifetime as possible and it starts with this trip. I hope to be like a sponge in Costa Rica, to soak in as much as possible and then be able to squeeze out every single detail onto paper so you will be able to see how great of an experience it was for me (hopefully!). So bring it on Costa Rica, let’s make some memories!
