Folium: Understanding The Design Behind 5 Of The World’s Most Recognizable National Flags via Directory Journal
National flags are something, that today, we tend to take for granted. Every country on every continent has their flag, and even emerging factions establish flags as a standard of unity before governments are even thought of. There is a long history of flags and standards and the pride that they evoke in the hearts of people.
“Yet although flags seem to have represented countries for centuries, the concept of countries having their own national flags is relatively new – the 19th and early part of the 20th century is often seen as the most popular time for the development to have taken place.”
In The United States of America we have fifty stars representing the fifty modern states and thirteen stripes representing the thirteen original colonies. It’s elementary school material. We salute the flag before school, races, games, matches, and we hold our hand over our hearts when the flag is lifted above our medal-winning olympians.
But what about the other 200-some odd countries in the world? What are their flags like, and what do they mean?
This is a great article outlining the national symbols of The United Kingdom, The United States, Japan, South Africa, and Turkey.
It’s a long-ish read, but definitely an interesting one. Discover the symbols of great nations around the world!
