Aero: Kasey Wesley – Costa Rica 2013 – Family Life
I could write for days about my family life experiences. Not only was I lucky enough to have an outstanding host family but I also had an amazing living environment that I was more than comfortable in and enjoyed to its fullest. I will continue to visit and forever keep in contact with this family.
I stayed with a couple that had two sons ages 15 and 17 who left half way through the trip to come to the US to study. They were able to speak quite a bit of English as well as their mother Marta. The house I stayed in was a condo that was highly secure. You had to pass through a gate to get in and out and it you did not live in the complex the front security phoned your destination seeking permission before letting you through. I felt very safe at all times.
The boys did things that teenage boys do. They had computers and video games as well as friends over on their free time. This time of year happens to be their summer break from school so they tried to relax and hang out as much as possible. Each night we sat at the table with Marta and Marco to have dinner. We ate things like steak, mashed potatoes, rice and beans pizza and sandwiches. The food at home was always great and fresh without any complaints. I did notice portion sizes were much smaller than in the US which most likely means they were portioned correctly.
Another thing that really stood out to me was the bond between family members. The teenage boys were extremely respectful to their parents and showed affection without hesitation. They were all very close which I learned families tend to do in Costa Rica. It was refreshing to see the way other families interact and value one another. We were greeted each morning with fresh fruit and juices and each night ended with an outstanding meal.
I am very excited for the next time I am able to visit. This family welcomed me with open arms and made my stay as homelike as possible. One of my biggest fears was joining a family I did not know and it was immediately erased from the time I arrived.
