When speaking about the past in English, you choose which past tense to use depending on the context and the meaning you wish to convey. In Spanish sentences, you chose which past tense you use depending only on the meaning you wish to convey.

Here is how you conjugate [-ER] verbs in the preterite (past) tense!

yo [-í]
tú [-iste]
él/ella/usted [-ió]
nosotros(as) [-imos]
vosotros(as) [-isteis]
ellos/ellas/ustedes [-ieron]

You’ll notice that [-ER] verbs and [-IR] verbs have the SAME ENDINGS IN THE PRETERITE TENSE!

Here are some common [-ER] verbs that are regular in the preterite tense!

APRENDER : To learn

Yo aprendí español.

BEBER : To drink

Ellos lo bebieron todo.
They drank it all.

COMER : To eat

Ella no comió nada.
She did not eat anything.
