As in the United States, life in a French-speaking town or village is very different from life in a big city. Learn how to talk about the features of typical French-speaking villages so that you can better appreciate all of their charm!
un agriculteur : farmer
Mon oncle est agriculteur.
My uncle is a farmer.
l’agriculture (feminine) : agriculture
L’agriculture est très importante à l’économie française.
Agriculture is very important to the French economy.
une bastide : fortified village / fortified town
La bastide fournissait l’abri aux paysans.
The fortified village provided protection to the peasants.
la campagne : countryside /country (as opposed to city)
La famille a une résidence secondaire à la campagne.
The family has a second home in the country.
un champ : field
Nous passons beaucoup de champs de blé.
We are passing a lot of fields of wheat.
une chapelle : chapel
Il y a une belle petite chapelle dans le village.
There is a lovely little chapel in the village.
une chaumière : thatched cottage
