I’ve spent a good deal of time in airports, probably not more than some road warriors, but enough to say that I know my way around an international terminal. I’ve seen a lot of people take all sort of things in their travels, and I’m pretty sure that I can check off everyone on the list.
Different people take different things when they travel. We’ve all seen the hippie walking through the airport with just a guitar and a journal, or the businessperson who has perfected the science of compacting his clothes into a carry-on. But what does your luggage say about you? That you’re a fun-loving risk-taking kind of traveler? A checklist tourist? Traveling with kids? We examine the spectrum of travelers by what they take along.
I tend to fall in between the “backpacker” and the “businessman”. I enjoy traveling light and fast with little worries about personal belongings. In fact, I’m a large subscriber to the idea that the more stuff you have the more you have to worry about. This has been challenged lately by my increasing age, my ability to carry backpacks, and my responsibilities as a study abroad leader (gotta be prepared for all scenarios!) On the other hand, not knowing where my next food, bed, or flight is coming from no longer thrills me as much as it used to. I’ve gotten soft, and frankly, I’ve paid my dues. I want taxi service to my hotel (nothing fancy, but air conditioning is a plus), I want a nice quiet meal, and WiFi. Call me soft… I need WiFi. (Gotta check the Yelp reviews on the tour companies before throwing down the cash!)
So here’s full disclosure. I carry a rolling duffel from EMS, a camera bag, and sometimes a spare day-pack for wandering around. I’m comfy, but not bogged down.
