Aero: Kasey Wesley – Costa Rica 2013 – My Expectations
The most exciting part of this study abroad trip is that I am not sure what to expect. I have traveled a little and flown before but my only time out of the US was to Canada. While being in the United States we tend to forget there is a whole other world out there. I am looking forward to learning a new culture and having the opportunity to see daily living in another country.
I am unsure what to expect of living with a host family. I am used to staying in hotels or with family. Staying with someone who I’ve never met in a country I have never been is sure to be beneficial. I am excited to have the chance to stay with people who are completely accustomed to the lifestyle and important monuments I as a visitor must see.
As far as technology I would think we are quite advanced in the United States. I am interested to see if texting or cell phones in general are built into everyday life the way they are here. I am wondering if children play outside on playgrounds, in parks and front yards or if they will be found indoors on computers or playing video games. I am very curious about the living conditions in Costa Rica. I think I will find that housing and neighborhoods are very similar but at the same time traveling to a different country you expect they will be different. The climate alone is so much different than I am used to in January. I am excited to try new foods and seeing what restaurants are like in Costa Rica.
As far as speaking the language, there is always more to learn. I have learned a lot this past semester and I am nervous but excited to see how well I can interact in a Spanish speaking environment. Being that Costa Rica is one of the most economically developed countries in Central America I look forward to seeing what resources are available for students. As the trip is approaching quickly I become more and more inquisitive of what is to come.
