The food that you see down is Costa Rica is very different from what we see here in the United States. Most of the meals served in Costa Rica come with rice and black beans. One of the most popular dishes that you see in the local restaurants is called a “casado”. What that is generally a large dish that comes with your choice of meat from chicken to fish, you also get rice, black beans, a vegetable, and a starch in the form of pasta or potatoes. It is a very delicious and very filling. The food that they serve in Costa Rica is very good and you can tell that all the food that they serve is very fresh and locally grown. They also serve large portions of the food that they have. Living with my host family I was able to try some things that I have never been able to, wanted to try before. Some of those things are yucca, and avocado. For breakfast we got to try the normal breakfast meal which is a meal with rice and black beans mixed together with some sauce, unfortunately I did not care for it but it was not bad.

For most of the remainder of the trip, for breakfast, we had cereal, toast, eggs, and lots of different fruits. We also got a drink that is also very popular in Costa Rica it is kind of like a milkshake. What it is, is a mixture of milk and ice, and either strawberry or chocolate nesquik powder it was very good. The smoothies that they have down in Costa Rica are all fresh. There are no additives just pure fruit with either water, milk or yogurt. Some of my favorites from Costa Rica are their snow cones, ice cream, and their choco bananas. The snow cones are not like the ones that we have in the United States. The syrup that they use is not sweet it actually tastes like a cough syrup. Because of that they add powdered milk and sweetened condensed milk to make it sweet. The ice cream is also great. The reason the ice cream is so different from in the United States is because the ice cream in Costa Rica is made from pure cane sugar which makes it sweeter but also lighter. It is not as heavy as the ice cream in the United States. The choco bananas are just chocolate covered fresh bananas with nuts as well.

While the food was good and very interesting to try the best thing that you can find in Costa Rica is the coffee. Since the coffee is locally grown it tastes the best. Even the food in the super markets is different. In Costa Rica they don’t refrigerate their eggs because the eggs come in fresh every day. The meat is also very fresh as well. They don’t really have prepackaged meat like we can find in our local super markets everything is done behind the meat counters. The food that you find in the local fast food restaurants is also different. While their fast food places are the same as ours, like McDonalds, Taco Bell, and KFC and more, what you see one the menu is not what we see on our menus. When I had the chance to go to a McDonalds I ordered what I thought was going to be like chicken tenders like we have here in the United States. I was wrong, in Costa Rica they don’t have chicken tenders they have bone-in Chicken pieces like drum sticks and wings. The French fired while they are the same the ketchup that they use is different, it is sweeter than what we have because of the cane sugar. The coca cola was also tasted different from what we have here in the United States. The food that I had the chance to experience in Costa Rica was different from her in the US but it was also some of the greatest food that I have had the chance to try.
