Folium: Google expands Google Street view to Brazil and Mexican Ruins via Engadget
This isn’t the first time we’ve covered improvements to Google Street View in Folium, and I have the feeling that it definitely won’t be the last.
However… I consider this a good thing. Bring on the future of travel! (Or at least travel research!)
When we wrote about Google Street View’s guided tour of the Amazon River, many of our readers commented on the ability to travel the world without leaving their homes. This is just another example of this kind of technology moving forward, with a new perspective on how this technology plays a part in our “shrinking world”.
With most of the major motorways in the world well documented by Street View cameras, Google has turned their attention to the more inaccessible parts of the globe.
The impressive part isn’t just the satellite views, or the walk-throughs, but the 360 degree panoramic globes around the great pyramids of Chichén Itzá and Teotihuacan, Mexico.
Can you imagine? Pedaling a Google-bike around the great pyramids, taking snapshots and uploading them to the internet? Making a copy of real life accessible to everyone around the world?
Engadget’s right, it’s not a substitute for a real trip to these world heritage sites. However, it’s a great way to demystify the unknown and get to know where you’re going before you even get there.
And trust me, you need to get there!
How have you used Google maps to prepare for upcoming vacations? Let us know in the comments below!
