Folium: The World’s Population Density Visualized via Gizmodo
So, first and foremost, this article is a Gizmodo feature of a web site designed by Derek Watkins. His website is interactive and I totally recommend playing with the website before reading any further!

Pretty cool huh!
I’m a sucker for data visualization, especially when it sheds light on numbers that are too big to wrap our brains around by themselves. When it comes to understanding the population of the planet, the simpler the better!
Derek’s data came from a research project to grid population data over at Columbia.edu
The point is, once we leave our local “bubbles”, there are billions of people out there! Sometimes we need this kind of visualization in order to understand that there are people on every continent, and they are living their lives, in their communities, every minute of every day!
This is a “heads-up” kind of moment, where day after day we become blind to the big picture because we are so focused on the minutiae of our own spheres of influence. When we “look up”, “take off the blinders”, “zoom out”, or any other colorful metaphor that we can come up with, we can really take in the scope of what this planet has to offer. All of those zones colored in black are packed with new people to meet, new food to try, new enterprises to explore, and new experiences to be had. Where there are people, there is opportunity, and I hope that we will begin to understand that our towns, cities, states, and even countries don’t hold monopolies on opportunity.
The map is clear, there are people out there! And if you want to succeed in this world, it’s time to get out there and meet them!
