In French, there are a number of expressions that employ different phrases in order to talk about the weather. Some of these phrases will use the verb FAIRE. Other phrases will use the construction IL Y A. And still other phrases will use special verbs of their own.
Here are some simple weather NOUNS to get us started :
le temps : the weather
On ne peut pas contrôler le temps!
We can’t control the weather!
le climat : the climate
Je préfère habiter dans un climat doux.
I prefer to live in a mild climate.
la météo : the weather forecast
J’aime écouter la météo le soir.
I like to listen to the weather forecast in the evening.
le froid : the cold
Je n’aime pas le froid.
I do not like the cold.
la chaleur: the heat
Je préfère la chaleur.
I prefer the heat.
le vent: the wind
Le vent est fort aujourd’hui.
The wind is strong today.
le soleil : the sun
Le soleil brille beaucoup aux Caraïbes.
The sun shines a lot in the Caribbean.
la pluie : the rain
Le match a été suspendu à cause de la pluie.
The game has been held up because of the rain.
la neige : the snow
Mes enfants adorent jouer dans la neige.
My children love to play in the snow.
un éclair : lightning
Il vaut mieux rester à l’intérieur quand il y a des éclairs.
It’s best to stay inside when there is lightning.
le tonnerre : thunder
Le tonnerre fait quelquefois beaucoup de bruit.
Thunder sometimes makes a lot of noise.
la grêle : hail
La grêle cabosse le toit de ma voiture!
The hail is denting the roof of my car!
le grésil : sleet
La voie est assez glissante à cause du grésil.
The road is pretty slippery because of the sleet.
le brouillard : the fog
Il est difficile de conduire dans le brouillard.
It is difficult to drive in the fog.
un nuage : a cloud
Le vent souffle les nuages.
The wind is blowing the clouds.
le ciel : the sky
Le ciel est couvert aujourd’hui.
The sky is cloudy (literally: covered) today.
la bruine : the mist / a sprinkle
Il y a souvent de la bruine à la côte.
There is often mist on the coast.
le crachin : drizzle
Il vaut mieux apporter un parapluie à cause du crachin.
It’s best to bring an umbrella because of the drizzle.
un orage : a storm (typically with rain, thunder, lightning)
On reste dehors à cause de l’orage.
We’re staying inside because of the storm.
une tempête : a storm (especially a windstorm)
Une grande tempête peut endommager l’électricité.
A big storm can damage the electricity.
une tempête de neige : a snowstorm
Il n’y a pas de classe aujourd’hui à cause de la tempête de neige.
There are no classes today because of the snowstorm.
Weather Phrases with the verb FAIRE :
Quel temps fait-il? : What’s the weather like? (What weather is it making?)
Il fait froid. : It’s cold. (It makes cold.)
Il fait chaud. : It’s hot. (It makes hot.)
Il fait humide. : It’s humid. (It makes humid.)
Il fait du soleil. / Il fait soleil. : It’s sunny. (It makes sun)
Il fait beau. : The weather is good. (It makes good weather.)
Il fait bon. : The weather is fine. (NOTE: This expression is usually used to refer to the temperature.)
Il fait mauvais. : The weather is bad. (It makes bad weather.)
Il fait frais. : It’s cool / chilly / brisk. (It makes cool / chilly / brisk)
Il fait gris. : It’s cloudy. (Literally: It’s gray.)
Il fait du vent. : It’s windy.
Il fait un temps orageux. : It’s stormy.
Il fait 50 degrès. : It’s 50 degrees.
Weather Phrases with the construction IL Y A … (there is / there are …) :
Il y a du soleil. : It’s sunny.
Il y a du vent. : It’s windy.
Il y a du brouillard. : It’s foggy.
Il y a des éclairs. : It’s lightning.
Il y a du tonnerre. : It’s thundering.
Il y a de l’humidité. : It’s humid.
Il y a des nuages. : It’s cloudy.
Il y a des orages. : It’s stormy.
Weather Phrases with the verb C’EST :
C’est nuageux. : It’s cloudy.
C’est orageux. : It’s stormy.
Other weather expressions simply use a single special verb :
Il pleut. : It is raining. / It rains. From the verb pleuvoir (to rain)
Il pleut beaucoup dans la jungle.
It rains a lot in the jungle.
Il pleut des cordes. / Il pleut à verse. : It’s pouring. / It’s raining cats and dogs.
Oh là là! Il pleut des cordes en ce moment!
Oh my! It’s pouring right now!
Il bruine. : It is sprinkling. From the verb bruiner (to sprinkle)
Bienqu’il bruine, le match continue.
Even though it’s sprinkling, the game is continuing.
Il crachine. : It is drizzling. From the verb crachiner (to drizzle)
Il crachine le matin.
It drizzles in the mornings.
Il neige. : It is snowing. / It snows. From the verb neiger (to snow)
Il neige aux montagnes.
It snows in the mountains.
Il grésille. : It is sleeting. From the verb grésiller (to sleet)
Aujourd’hui il fait froid et il grésille.
Today it’s cold and it’s sleeting.
Il grêle. : It is hailing. From the verb grêler (to hail)
Il grêle maintenant; on peut voir la grêle dans la rue.
It’s hailing now; you can see the hail in the street.
Il gèle. : It is freezing. From the verb géler (to freeze)
Il gèle au pôle Nord.
It’s freezing at the North Pole.
Il vente. : It is windy. From the verb venter (to be windy)
J’ai perdu mon chapeau parce qu’il vente beaucoup!
I lost my hat because it’s very windy!

What is the weather (like) today?
Aujourd’hui il fait beau.
Today it is nice weather.
Quel temps fait-il au printemps?
What is the weather like in the spring?
Au printemps le ciel est couvert et il pleut.
